Staying Grounded

As we finish off another week of social distancing and isolation, I’m blown away by our patients’ commitment to health and wellness during these unprecedented times.  I have spoken to many of you this week.  All of us have been feeling the challenges of stress, boredom, lack of activity, and lack of freedom to go places we’d normally go.  This has been manifesting in emotional eating, lethargy and low mood, for many.  However, creating small, daily goals can help to re-set the mind and body.  Accomplishing tasks gives us a purpose, and having a creative or physical outlet grounds our minds.  We are continuing to connect with you through Facebook with videos and updates.  Now is the time to share with each other what’s working, what’s not, and how we are maneuvering through our unique situations.  I encourage you all to share your health strategies, goals and intentions; with supportive family and friends, or with a supportive online community.  Sharing helps us feel accountable and supportive of each other, and helps us learn new things from others we may not have thought of before. What 3 things could you do today to feel grounded?  Could you do 5 minutes of strength movements? Could you get 15 minutes of sunlight on your skin?  Could you avoid snacking after 6pm?  Write down a few simple goals, and check them off as you accomplish them.  Write down goals that are inspiring to you as well, or enjoyable.  Could you listen to an interesting podcast while you clean?Never give up on your commitment to your health. No matter where you’re at, acknowledge yourself for the healthy habits you’ve continued, and intend to put in place. Thinking of you, with you in spirit, and don’t ever give up!Dr. DougBelow is a message from our nurse, Maureen, for all of you:Hello Everyone,I am hoping you are all staying healthy during this coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.  It is a challenging time for everyone. In terms of coping with staying on track with nutrition during this reality, I am constantly thinking of the serenity prayer: “God grant me the serentiy to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”So I am trying to stick to all my healthy habits in order to stick to my healthy lifestyle.  I believe sticking to your healthy routine, schedule and habits gives you a sense of control within the current reality.  Stick to your proteins, fats and veggies, some fruit, keep hydrated.Continue with your intermittent fasting – it could be a challenge to see if more hours would be possible within being at home rather than at work.  Continue to think about self care.  Keep walking, keep moving, keep social distance but get fresh air if possible.Walk it out, talk it out; it helps to keep everything in perspective.  Keep connected (virtually) with your family and friends.Journal if it helps you cope with the current realities. Keep up with your hobbies or try and figure out what still gives you joy within what we are living.  Know that we are thinking about you – we are connecting with patients on the phone or virtually, and so moved and inspired by their resilience.  Stay well!Sincerely,Maureen
