More Evidence about Omega-3’s
Consuming omega-3 fatty acids may help stave off age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of vision loss among older adults, suggests a study published in the December 2009 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study included 1,837 people at moderate-to-high risk of AMD who answered questionnaires about their diet. Researchers found that people who reported the highest consumption of omega-3s were 30 percent less likely than those with the lowest intake to develop AMD over a 12-year period. Good sources of omega-3s include fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and albacore tuna. Eating fish, especially fatty fish rich in omega-3s, at least twice a week is generally a good pattern to follow.
