Ways to Lose Weight that Don't Involve Diet and Exercise

The Following is a summary of eight weight loss tips posted by Dr. Jason Fung on the
Diet Doctor's web site (www.dietdoctor.com):

1) Meal order: When we are very hungry, fries, bread and pasta are all very appealing. An easy way to shed pounds is to arrange foods in a healthier order. Start the meal with a large glass of water or cup of broth. Sometimes we can't distinguish whether we are hungry or thirsty. Next, eat some vegetables either in a soup or salad before the main course. These foods don't stimulate an insulin response. They have a lot of bulk, fill up the stomach and send signals that you are getting full. Those fries won't look as appealing if you are not as hungry.

2) Eat slowly: If you "wolf your food down” your body will not have time to register that it is getting full. Chew food slowly, try 20 times for each mouthful. Set your knife and fork down between each mouthful. Even sit on your hands to resist the urge of having that next forkful ready while you are still chewing.

3) Never shop when hungry: It is difficult to resist higher caloric foods when hungry. Best time to shop is just after eating.

4) Use smaller plates: Adults tend to finish everything that is on their plate rather than stopping if their body triggers they are getting full. Smaller plates mean less food to finish.

5) Out of sight, out of mind: Keep all snacks and unhealthy foods out of sight. Better still, don't bring tempting foods into the house. Stay out of the kitchen until meal time.

6) Eat only at mealtimes: Grazing continually will only cause you to gain weight. Eat only if sitting down at a table. This helps us be more mindful of what we are eating. Avoid eating out of habit such as at the theatre or in front of the television. If you are not really hungry, don't eat. Hunger tends to come in waves. Often times if it will pass if you ignore it and your body will start to burn fat. Try that glass of water here.

7) Get a good night's sleep: Sleep deprivation can cause weight gain because it tends to "mess” with our hormones.

8) Try intermittent fasting: In other words, just don't eat every meal. If you don't eat, you will lose weight. Glucose is the main source of energy for our bodies. If it is not available through food intake, our bodies will burn fat for energy. Human bodies are well adapted for dealing with times when no food is available. If you do decide to fast, stay well hydrated with water, coffee and broth.
